Spray Tan Aftercare: What to Do After Your Spray Tan
The first 24 hours after your spray tan are critical to achieving that flawless, golden glow. With the right aftercare, you can extend the life of your tan and avoid blotching, streaking, or fading. Below are our expert spray tan aftercare tips, straight from the professionals at Ithaca Wax & Beauty Therapy™.
✅ First 24 Hours After Your Spray Tan
Wondering what to do after a spray tan? Start here:
- Wear loose-fitting, dark clothing to avoid smudging or transferring the spray tan. Avoid tight clothes like jeans, leggings, yoga pants, bras, or socks immediately after your appointment.
- Skip the bra and undies if you can. If needed, opt for a loose, dark pair of underwear and a strapless or bandeau bra to prevent lines or fabric transfer.
- Stay completely dry for at least 6–8 hours. This means no showering, sweating, working out, or applying lotions or liquid makeup. Moisture can disrupt the development of your spray tan.
- Avoid showering for at least 8-12 hours (Classic Tan) and no longer than 24 hours. For Express Tans, rinse within 2–5 hours depending on your desired shade.
- When you shower:
- Use lukewarm water (not hot).
- Avoid exfoliants or washcloths.
- Rinse gently using only your hands and an oil-free cleanser.
- Pat dry—don’t rub.
- Moisturize immediately after your first rinse with an oil-free, unscented moisturizer. Hydrated skin holds your tan longer and fades more evenly.
- Avoid applying makeup for 6–8 hours after your tan. Products can interfere with how the solution sets and may cause blotching or uneven tones.
🧴 Spray Tan Aftercare: Days 1–7
Want to know how long a spray tan lasts? With proper care, your tan can last 5 to 10 days. Here’s how to maintain your spray tan all week long:
- Moisturize twice daily—morning and night—with an oil-free, unscented lotion.
We recommend Hempz Tan Extender, available in our retail section, to keep your glow going strong.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to water, such as swimming, soaking in baths, long showers, steam rooms, and saunas. Water and humidity can cause your tan to fade more quickly.
- Stay away from harsh chemicals like chlorine and skincare products containing acids (salicylic, glycolic, etc.). Also avoid massages, waxing, bandages, or anything that may strip your tan.
- Limit skin-to-skin contact. Believe it or not, crossing your arms or legs for long periods can cause friction and discoloration—especially in hot weather.
✨ Pro Tips for Long-Lasting Spray Tans
- Exfoliate thoroughly before your tan—but never after.
- Use oil-free skincare products from start to finish.
- Book waxing and other services at least 24 hours before your spray tan appointment.
- Consider regular spray tan maintenance to build and sustain your glow over time.
