A spray tan is a safe and effective way to achieve a natural-looking, sun-kissed glow without exposure to harmful UV rays. During a spray tan, a fine mist containing DHA (dihydroxyacetone), a sugar-based compound, is applied to the skin. The color develops over several hours and typically lasts 5–10 days, depending on skin type, lifestyle, and aftercare.
Unlike tanning beds or sunbathing, spray tanning does not increase the risk of skin damage, premature aging, or skin cancer. At Ithaca Wax & Beauty Therapy, each spray tan is fully customized to your skin tone to ensure an even, natural finish.
Proper preparation helps ensure the most even and long-lasting results:
To extend the life of your spray tan:
No. We use high-quality, professional spray tanning solutions designed to produce natural, realistic results. Each tan is customized to your skin tone to ensure an even finish with no orange undertones.
A typical spray tan appointment takes 15–20 minutes. You will need to allow a few additional minutes for drying before dressing. We recommend wearing loose, dark clothing after your appointment to avoid rubbing or staining during development.
Yes. Shaving or waxing should be done at least 24–48 hours before your spray tan appointment. This allows the skin to calm and pores to close, helping prevent dark spots or uneven absorption of the tanning solution.
For best results, we recommend waxing 48 hours prior whenever possible.
Most clients with sensitive skin tolerate spray tanning very well. Our professional solutions are formulated to be gentle and customizable. If you have known skin sensitivities, allergies, or concerns, please let your spray tan artist know prior to your appointment so we can adjust your service accordingly.
You may wear whatever you are comfortable with. Many clients choose disposable underwear, dark swimwear, or go nude for the most even results. Privacy is always respected, and you will be guided through the process in a comfortable, private setting.
Some temporary transfer may occur during the initial development period. We recommend wearing loose, dark clothing after your appointment and using dark sheets the first night. Any transfer should wash out easily and will stop after your first rinse.
While spray tanning is generally considered safe, we recommend consulting with your healthcare provider before booking if you are pregnant. Please inform your spray tan artist ahead of time so we can take additional precautions.
Dry areas such as elbows, knees, ankles, hands, and feet absorb more solution and may appear darker. Proper exfoliation and moisturizing before your appointment help prevent this. Your spray tan artist will also use barrier cream and blending techniques to ensure an even, natural finish.
